Jan Robson has been presented with the gavel and gong from outgoing president Peter Noble to become the first female president. Ms Robson said she joined in 2015 after she moved back to the area because she wanted to make new friends. "It is just great friendship and great to be helping the community. You just get a real buzz from doing things and seeing the smiles on people's faces", Ms Robson said. "Over the years it has been a male thing and now the ladies have stepping in and taken over." She said she had come up through the ranks and then put her hand up for the presidency and was uncontested for the role. "The motto is share the load, we want everyone out there to share the load." The club raised $4000 for drought relief from holding Saturday morning barbecues at Coles and they are hosting the state convention in November." - source The Advocate newspaper 15/9/18.

August 5 2017 - Mersey Lions BBQ at Coles Devonport

Our club runs regular BBQs at Coles and the occasional BBQ at Harris Scarfe and other venues in and around Devonport. On August 5th we had a trainee volunteer come along. Hannah McGee, the 14 year old daughter of current Secretary Lion Christian helped with almost all aspects of the BBQ (except the cooking which Bill Clarke did a fine job of). Hannah even helped Dad check that the donation tally was correct after the BBQ had finished. Hannah thoroughly enjoyed her day out and thought it was funny how much us old blokes stir each other up. Lion Gael Gault gave Hannah a personally signed Poem which she thought was "cute".

Thank you to all BBQ team members for making Hannah feel so welcome and for encouraging her interest in volunteering from a proud Dad - Lion Christian McGee.

As it turned out, the weather on the day was terrible, and so the BBQ was cancelled (though the Guides – who must be made of heartier stuff, still turned up and sold Guides Biscuits). Instead, we dedicated the following BBQ to the Guides. At our July 20 Dinner Meeting, Local Guide Leader Jodie Gausden and her daughter Guide Tiana joined us for dinner. Jodie spoke about the work of the local Guide Group and President Peter presented her with a cheque for $600 on behalf of the Club.

    July 1 2017 - Change Over Night - Mersey-Devonport Lions

The Mersey-Devonport Lions Club held their 2017-18 Change Over Night on Saturday July 1 at Inn-dulgence in Devonport. The food was great, the company even better! Alyssa Bryan for the Penguin Leos installed our 2017-18 officers with a bit of added humour to spice up an otherwise dry affair. What a great ambassador for Leos and the younger generation. Margaret Fay did a fantastic job as tail twister - lots of laughs and fines. Outgoing President Dennis Applebee reflected on a good year and awarded President's awards to Noel Bilson, Ian Keating and Christian McGee. Incoming President Peter Noble accepted the Lions Gong and Gavel from Outgoing President Dennis Applebee. May 18 2017 - Lions Club of Mersey-Devonport Charter 41st Anniversary Dinner

On May 18th, it was great to celebrate the 41st anniversary of the Chartering of our Club. It was really special to have three serving Charter Members present on the night: Lion Ken Knowles, Lion Malcolm Murray, and Lion Vere Cooper. Lion Malcolm spoke on the person of Melvin Jones, as the founder of Lions Clubs International, almost 100 years ago. Lions International will celebrate 100 years of Service in June. Sadly, the guests invited from Harris Scarfe were not able to attend, which was a shame, since we had intended to honour them for their generous support of our Club. They also featured fairly prominently in the great skit - a bit of nonsense greatly enjoyed by all.
